We did regular school work through the second week of December and also managed to do some fun advent-y things like go to the Nutcracker and have a sleepover with friends. It also snowed and we got to play in it! I attempted to do the maple syrup candy activity from Little House, and it was an epic fail. I didn't use the right ingredients and we ended up with sugary snow. The kids still liked it though. We also did a (really cold) zoo day and explored the bug house and the aviary. Caley and Amelia wrote down their observations in their nature journals and earned points at the Nature Exchange and spent their points on prizes (shells, rocks, etc)!

Now that it's January we have moved into baby mode. We did school for two weeks and honestly I thought the baby would be here by now. I didn't plan school for this week. We've been taking it easy. Yesterday they played a lot of educational games (Monopoly Jr, Sight Word Bingo) and played very well with each other, creating elaborate games and make-believe. I also let them dig outside in the dirt, a project they've been working on for Bill.

I read an article recently about the value of play for a child. A lot of it was stuff I already thought but couldn't articulate why it was important. Read the article here: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/give-childhood-back-to-children-if-we-want-our-offspring-to-have-happy-productive-and-moral-lives-we-must-allow-more-time-for-play-not-less-are-you-listening-gove-9054433.html

It basically says that we must let our children play if we expect them to be decent adults some day. The rationale is that in play we learn how to interact with one another and problem-solve. Book-learning and worksheet-completing doesn't have the same effect on a child's long-term success. I have struggled with balancing "doing school" with letting kids be kids. I'm not an unschooler, in which there is no structure to which my children must adhere, but it feels wrong to make Caley and Amelia sit all day and complete worksheets in every subject.

This week so far has been an exercise in the value of play and character training. Both for myself and the kids. I can feel Jesus telling me to rest and I want to push through and make my body go into labor if I can, which is just going to be frustrating. Today the three younger kids were playing upstairs very nicely and Caley and I read books on the couch. It was lovely. Then later in the day we did quiet time and I actually rested again. Caley cleaned out the fridge top to bottom and earned 50 cents.

I don't know how many more days we have until baby arrives, but I am trying to treasure this time snuggling with each kiddo without having to juggle an infant. And when he arrives I hope I remember to let the kids rest with him and all of us together before I push them back into "school mode." Because really, they are learning loads more from being together as a family and adapting to a new sibling than I could ever try to teach with a worksheet.Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-30056752493682211482013-11-01T22:45:00.001-07:002013-11-01T22:45:15.066-07:00Our first vacation weekWe just finished our first vacation week in our new year-round schedule. It was a fun and welcome break from school work! But we definitely still did a whole lotta learnin'! On Sunday we had Della's birthday party and on Monday we went to the Pacific Science Center! It was so fun and educational. We hadn't been to PSC for about seven years and there were some new exhibits, but mostly it was how I remember it. Many of the exhibits and activities directly related to the concepts we learned the last few weeks, especially Newton's Laws. The kids had a lot of fun, and I think in a few years will appreciate it more in relation to what we are currently studying. Monday night we had community group costume party! So fun to dress up and spend time with friends!

On Tuesday we had a jammie day and it was also Della's birthday. Staying home, playing games and watching movies was a perfect follow-up to such a busy Monday. I wanted to get working on laundry and chores and Della just followed after me and screamed. I realized she just needed some Mommy time, so we cuddled on the couch. It was exactly what she (and I) needed, and I'm so glad I was able to look past my chores and spend time with her.

Wednesday was my birthday and we went to the zoo with Bill and my mother-in-law. It was a homeschool day with special events and homeschool groups. It was so fun, but Amelia was sick for most of the day. Thankfully Nana sat with her in the car while she rested and was able to join the rest of us for more exhibits. I really liked the Northern Trail with the bears, elk and wolves. It was so peaceful and quiet, and all the animals were out and able to be seen. We ended up getting a membership too and I am excited to go more this year.

Thursday was Halloween and another low-key day. The kids got to spend a lot of time with Nana, which was great. And of course trick-or-treating! The big kids and Bill walked around the neighborhood while Della and I passed out candy at our house. They got SO much candy! We sorted it together--math time!

Friday we went to the library and did "movie day" in the afternoon. Overall it was a fun week with many educational opportunities. I appreciated the break from regular lessons and hopefully it will help with the burnout I felt at the end of last school year. However, I am looking forward to a much more normal week next week!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-37904359368841800782013-10-21T16:00:00.000-07:002013-10-21T16:00:20.881-07:00School Year 2013-14Hello blog land!

We are finally into a routine for our school year, and it's going pretty well. The biggest change this year is we are doing a year-round schedule. I spent a lot of time researching year-round school and there are many schedules that are used. We settled on a modified three weeks on, one week off schedule. Our first break is the last week of October, which works nicely because my and Della's birthdays are that week (plus Halloween). It's kind of working out that our birthday weeks we don't have school. We are taking several weeks off in January/February though because we are expecting another baby! Hooray! This baby boy is due January 25. I'm thinking he will arrive around January 20th based on previous deliveries.

I am noticing that Amelia is very mathematically inclined, much in the same way Caley is reading-inclined. It's so neat to see their preferences and talents come out, and how God has made them so uniquely.

We are studying "Inquisitiveness" this year. It's a lot of science and history. So far we have studied the scientific method (very basic) and some of the big scientists and philosophers such as Galileo and Copernicus. Later this fall we will get into astronomy and geology and will be studying things like earthquakes and volcanoes. Today we did a little learning about Isaac Newton!

This year has been more difficult so far than others. One reason is because the kids are older and demanding more difficult projects, and also because Della and Wes are not reliably napping like last year. Della will nap in the early afternoon, but sometimes she just screams. Wes doesn't really nap but will do quiet time. There are just a lot of bumps in starting out this year. It has crossed my mind more than once--why are we doing this? The local school is great and a 10 minute walk away. And if I sent Amelia and Caley to the public elementary school they'd both be gone the majority of the day and it'd be "easier." Also it feels like Caley being in 3rd grade is "real." Not that it wasn't real before, but it just feels like we have both feet in the pool and the pool is just getting deeper.

It's days, or seasons, such as these that I have to remind myself we are homeschooling because Jesus told us to, not because it makes the most (or any) sense. And, I like it, despite the hard days. It's the right choice for our family right now. We made it through ANOTHER year! Praise Jesus!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-59641842020070897932013-06-02T14:08:00.001-07:002013-06-02T14:08:29.964-07:00Another year downOur 2012-13 school year has ended! We survived! 4 kids, first year with two being homeschooled (officially) and we had a great year. A few highlights for me, with pictures to come:

Doing kindergarten with Amelia was far easier than when we did kindergarten with Caley, both because Amelia's a different kid than Caley and because I'm a little more confident in teaching kindergarten.

We learned about the Revolutionary war in conjunction with the election in November, I plan on doing this during each election cycle and look forward to their deepened understanding each time we hit these topics.

Taking all of December off seems to work very well for us. It's a busy season and I love being able to focus on Jesus instead of feeling like a failure for not doing the math lesson for the day.

I am the teacher. I do not have to obey every instruction in every curriculum. Amelia finished her math book two months early because we didn't do every lesson because she already knew the material.

I am not owed a break every day. If I don't get up early to exercise or read my bible, I shouldn't get mad if I can't find the time later in the day.

This was the first year Caley had to take a standardized test. She is right on for her age, in most areas. Her strengths are language arts and social studies. Her weaknesses are math and science. It was redeeming for her and me to get an unbiased view of her learning. Still, the test did not test exactly what we focused on this year so I shouldn't be discouraged that her math was lower than I wanted.

It's okay to take a day off here and there. Both the kids and I need it. I am not a failure.

Life happens. Caley got a headgear in April, we thought Wesley was going deaf, somedays school is just learning to slog through the daily crap together.

I mapped out what volume we will use each year and basically one volume covers two school years, there are three volumes total, and we will re-study each volume every six years. So right now we are studying volume 2, Courage unit. We will study this same material again in 2018-19 (Caley would be in 9th grade, Amelia in 7th, Wesley in 5th, and Della in 4th). HOLY COW I just wrote that my BABY will someday be in 4th grade!! However, I will amend the plan as needed and probably study elections and presidents every four years (at least) to capitalize on the election cycle.

This is my loose plan. Of course, we will ask Jesus each year if he has different plans for our children's schooling, and as Caley and Amelia reach middle school and high school age we may "outsource" some things. Right now I am looking into Family Academy.

Sometimes I get self conscious about all this. It's really a part of my sanctification that we are homeschooling. I went into it with the wrong motives. I wanted to get the credit if my kids turned out well. God quickly smashed those idols in my face. I am nothing if I am not following Him. My good motives are bad unless I am following Him. My children are created to image HIM, not me.
We have been MIA on this blog, but I wanted to stop in and say we are still doing school! We took the month of December off (as is becoming a tradition) and did lots of fun Christmas activities and adventures. We went to the Nutcracker (all five of us) and then out to coffee and treats, we did lots of crafts and made many gifts, visited family and the kids even spent four days at Grandma's house in Oregon, without Mom and Dad!
So it is January again and we are back in the swing of school. We are studying Courage and have covered Old and New Testament "heros" (while reminding them always that Jesus is the true hero), and this week and next we will cover true and fictional heros such as Joan of Arc, Martin Luther, William Tell, and Sarah Noble. Then we will launch into a 5-6 week study of the Revolutionary War! I chose this unit because we spent a little time in the fall talking about our Founding Fathers, I wanted to have more time to study a similar time period.
This season also has seen a shift in our weekly schedule. If you know me well, you know I like routine and have a hard time breaking from it, so this was a challenge for me, but one I know is totally worthwhile. My bible study/women's group grew so large we replicated, which turned into a long and complicated process. My half began meeting on Thursdays instead of our usual Wednesday. It's going well so far. I've also been doing grocery shopping usually on Sunday nights by myself instead of Monday morning with the kids. WHY didn't I start doing this earlier? An evening by myself? It's amazing! Plus I don't have to push school out of a weekday morning when we are shopping. Additionally, after my semi-breakdown of Fall 2012, I started looking for some help. No, not therapy, but a mother's helper to come do some of my chores. We finally found someone who is a great fit for our family. She's 13, homeschooled, and a-ma-zing! She's been helping us about once a week for 2-3 hours and mops, folds laundry, or plays with the kids while I do a task.
We have been learning about presidents and voting this week and last. It's been fun! At playgroup last week we had an election on an issue: what to eat for lunch! First the kids registered to vote, "campaigned" for their viewpoint, and then got to vote in the booth! The options were mac 'n' cheese or grilled cheese. Mac 'n' cheese won!
We also learned about the branches of government, and later added a card that says "president" under the Executive card. Obviously much of this is over their heads, but it's on display in the school room so hopefully over time it'll set in.
We have been learning about individual presidents and Caley has been working on a book about Abraham Lincoln. We've also learned how certain presidents are on our money. This week she really surprised me by doing most of her work independently on Wednesday while I was doing women's group. She did her math, some crossword pages, her editing page, independent reading, and her spelling work.

We are having fun learning about our Founding Fathers! So far we've covered George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin and James Madison. We have learned about the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, and more! Check out these pictures...
It obviously hasn't been perfect, I've lost my shizz at least twice, we haven't done everything I planned on the day I planned it for, but we have been learning, having fun, reading lots of books, and doing life.

A few things I've learned:
1. Having a schedule really helps. I put together a schedule for myself and the girls. The girl's each includes the subjects they're doing each day (the same each day except art and music on Fridays), and mine includes my commitments and chores for each day. We have a big house and it's a challenge to keep up with the housework. So on my daily schedule I assigned myself one or two chores, taking into account I probably don't want to wash the floor the day before women's group (read: messy kids everywhere). So: Sunday- review school plan and prepare and plan meal/grocery list, Monday- grocery day, Tuesday- laundry wash and fold and clean bathrooms (alternating upstairs and downstairs for now), Wednesday- wash hardwoods, Thursday- vacuum all carpets, Friday- monthly chore like clean out car, fridge, or dusting.
2. This is my "job." When I think of homeschooling my children and running my household as a "job" it's easier to take seriously and keep my time sacred. This involves, mainly, saying no to things. Sorry, I can't do this-or-that, we have school. Obviously there are exceptions, and we're only 2 weeks in so we'll see how this realistically works out, but I am practicing being more "selfish" with our time.
3. Number 1 and 2 are easier when I have planned "Mommy time" i.e. women's group. My weekly gathering with other Christian women is essential to my sanity. It reminds me of who I am first and foremost: a lover of Jesus Christ. I adore opening up my home each week to upwards of 12 ladies and their children to study the Bible and build community. It's also essential that I have face-to-face interactions with others, as much as I adore my children.
4. Getting up earlier than the kids also helps. I am still working on this habit. The days that I do drag myself out of bed at 5am, workout, and have prayer time are usually smoother and easier to deal with. But I do love sleeping in. Hoping to refine this habit throughout this year so that's it's just second-nature.

Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-55084426472929844412012-09-01T21:21:00.000-07:002012-09-01T21:21:39.635-07:00Summer is drawing to a close...I can see the start of school year 2012-13 on my calendar and am so excited to start on Tuesday! I have a lot of fun things planned for this fall. We are going to learn about the Founding Fathers, government, the electoral process and presidents! I am also going to attempt to be better about studying music and art with the girls, and keeping Wesley occupied during school instead of continually throwing food at him and pulling my hair out in frustration.

We've had a great summer. Busy, but not so busy I couldn't keep up. We balanced our busy weeks with some chill weeks. We didn't really go anywhere, but still took many day trips, although the kids did go to Astoria for two full weeks.

I have realized though that Caley may do better with a schedule like we have in school. She is 7.5 and over the summer started to do some of her old behaviors like refusing to put on shoes or complain that her clothes don't feel right. Issues I thought we had overcome. So I'm excited to see how she does over the next few weeks as we ease into a new structure to our days.

I also am going to make a better effort at being "selfish" with my/our time. If I say yes to anything and everything, school just isn't going to go very well. Examining my motives will be a discipline I get to work on.

Mommy's goals for this school year, posted here for my personal benefit (not to boast but to keep myself accountable):
-Wake up earlier than the kids (5am) to spend time with Jesus, workout, and get a head start on the day
-Keep "school time" sacred and not obligate our time to other things without good reason
-Make yummy, nutritious meals throughout the year, with healthy snacks throughout each day to keep the kid's minds sharp
(I'll add more to this list as the year goes on.)Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-81090482944012981112012-07-27T22:07:00.002-07:002012-07-27T22:07:34.821-07:00Summer SchoolWe finished school the first week of June and my best intentions of doing a wrap up on this blog didn't pan out...such is life. We are enjoying our summer vacation. I toyed with the idea of doing a scheduled and organized summer school and it hasn't happened. June flew by between "Grama Camp" and swimming lessons and then July has spun by too with VBS, another week of "Grama Camp" and holidays. August...we have nothing planned. Nothing. Okay, one thing, Amelia's birthday party. But after that, nothing. And I plan on keeping it that way. We will go to the park, have community group, women's group and various playdates here and there, but I hope to spend most of August enjoying the weather, our garden, and our little family.

Today we had an impromptu day at home and did a "Dinosaurs for Della" day! We read books about dinosaurs, watched library book videos about dinosaurs, made salt dough fossils, fossil sugar cookies, and watched "Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs"! The kids loved it!! (and so did Mommy) I hope we can do a few more of these "school" days this summer. No pressure, just fun learning. Later tonight we watched the Olympic opening ceremony in London which was also a great learning experience.

I love my kids and my husband, I love this life.
Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-2520892956497315142012-03-16T20:45:00.000-07:002012-03-16T20:45:12.974-07:00Update!It's been a while since this blog was updated! That seems to be how I begin every entry. I became convicted a few years ago that I was devoting more time to making the blog look good than actually being intentional with my children. So rest assured, we are regularly having school lessons and everyone's getting educated around here even if I am not updating the blog.

Since my last post, we have studied boats, airplanes, flight and floating, and we are currently in a mini-unit on the attributes of God (omniscient, holy, loving, omnipresent, eternal, immutable, omnipotent, etc). For our boats and floating unit we learned about Archimedes' principle of displacement and did an experiment in which we observed water being displaced with marbles, then made an aluminum foil boat. The kids had a lot of fun playing in the bathtub with their boats, it was actually quite a mess. During the airplanes and flight study we did the hairdryer and ping-pong ball experiment in which we floated the ball in the stream of hair dryer air and then made it shoot farther using a toilet paper tube to illustrate Bernoulli's principle (air increases in speed in small spaces). It was so fun! We also made paper helicopters and airplanes and threw them off the second floor landing.

Our Attributes of God unit was something I threw in between the "Trust" and "Stewardship" units. It's part of the "Honor" unit in KONOS and had so many fun activities and biblical tie-ins that I couldn't skip it. Another thing I love about homeschooling, especially not working with a district--I don't have to feel bad about teaching my kids about Jesus during "school time"! I actually made this mini-unit two weeks longer than originally planned so we are devoting a whole month to it. We have played with playdough to illustrate omnipotence, identified circles around the house to show eternalness, and Caley has also been learning how to use a dictionary to look up meanings of words. This week we studied God being eternal and read Revelation 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." This nicely lead us to learn a bit of Greek! We learned the Greek alphabet in a song and copied some Greek text. The girls loved it!

I have been trying a new thing regarding school--doing it in the afternoon! This way Wesley has more time to play with Caley and Amelia during the day instead of trying to keep him occupied while I do lessons with the girls. It has worked well, because he usually takes a good afternoon nap. School time usually takes 2-2.5 hours so we still have time for quiet time ourselves which is very helpful for mama's sanity.

I promise to post pictures soon, but there's a quick update for ya!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-20515781570722973192012-02-04T20:29:00.000-08:002012-02-18T19:46:45.878-08:00Two of my favorite things: Homeschooling and Ryan Gosling!I can't describe how awesome this is. So much that we didn't leave our house or neighborhood for 6 days! Bill worked from home two days and was off work two days. That left plenty of outside play time and inside play (Lego) time. We did school Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Wednesday we don't usually do school anyway, and Thursday was a "snow day" and the girls stayed in their jammies all day long and watched a movie! This week we studied sheep and beginning the process of weaving. We watched youtube videos about how a sheep is shorn and the process of making yarn from wool.
I'm getting into an okay rhythm of managing everyone during school time. We generally wake up and have breakfast then clean up from the morning and get started on chores (laundry mostly). After about 90 minutes, Della's ready to take her first nap. I lay her down and then we get cracking on school. It's usually around 9am. Everyone moves into the school room (which is now just a school room and not the play room, since my awesome husband decided the toys needed to be in a specific toy room), and we start with Bible, writing a verse, and then phonics (reading, editing, spelling). During this time Amelia works in her copy book or does some writing workbook pages. Then Caley does math and while she's working on her math homework pages I do the reading book with Amelia. Wesley is usually playing with random toys or sitting in his booster chair with tray and coloring or playing some busywork game I've made up on the fly. Last week I had him put pipe cleaners in a strainer (through the holes) and put coins in a wipes box. After math time and reading book, we usually take a break and have snack around 10:30, but if we started late and it's nearly lunchtime, I just make lunch and call it good. I like to bring the snack into the school room rather than having them eat in the kitchen, it saves on the mess.
After snack, if everything else is done, we move into our KONOS plan for the day. So this is usually the project or art time, depending on what I've planned. Sometimes if Caley still has work to do, I let Amelia start the project and then have Caley finish her work before starting the project. This helps with her motivation to endure the less interesting work. Sometimes our KONOS plan is listening to or watching a movie online and then doing a project related to it. Last week I had them listen to Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech and then color a picture showing their dream. Even though I explained that MLK's dream wasn't something he had while sleeping but something he wanted for the future, both the girls colored a picture of themselves with fairy wings flying to a castle because that was their wish. Oh well, maybe we'll tackle the issue of civil rights again next year.
After KONOS (or while we're still working), Della usually wakes up and there's about 30-60 minutes of free time before Wesley and Della go down for their naps. During this time we work on chores like laundry, dishes and vacuuming.
When the little ones go down for their naps, the girls and I finish up any leftover schoolwork or play a game or something. Then, depending on the day they do quiet time or just play together or help me with chores.

It's going well. The key is to work efficiently. And to not freak out when it doesn't go my way! :) This is surely a sanctifying adventure.Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-63098642165962413472012-01-06T20:55:00.000-08:002012-01-06T20:55:12.686-08:00The first week back...and my 100th post! The first normal week back to school in about 2 months went great! We studied trust and talked a lot about "stranger danger." Caley was very enthusiastic about her math work and is still reading confidently. We started a Grade 1 Editing book my mom gave us as well and also did some "Reader's Theater" of the "Three Little Pigs." My favorite thing about homeschooling is how it affects the girls independent play time. Frequently when I bring up new topics during school time, later that day the girls act it out. This happened with the Three Little Pigs this week.
This week I also got some chairs for the school room at the counter, so we don't have to move the kitchen chairs every day. The girls love it. They have been sitting at the counter all week doing projects when we're not doing school. It's a wonderful place for them to be creative and messy without it being everywhere else. Why didn't I do this sooner! We also recently moved all the toys that were in the mud/school room into a room upstairs. We removed the bed and made it a play room. Again, why didn't we do this sooner? It's simplified everything! No toys all over the house, just upstairs in the play room. Of course, we allow some toys downstairs, as long as they go back upstairs at the end of the day. And school time is so much neater because there's less crap to fall over.
We also took a field trip on Friday (today) to visit Great Grandma in Silverdale. It was a fun day!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-33327410656493519532011-12-31T16:06:00.000-08:002011-12-31T16:06:21.377-08:002012I am so excited to hit the ground running this week and re-start school! I spent some time over Christmas break re-arranging the school room and planning most of the next quarter in KONOS. I'm sure this quarter will have its challenges, but I'm so excited! More specifics forthcoming. :)Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-70421186620807384742011-12-08T06:20:00.001-08:002011-12-11T22:25:13.991-08:00Catching upDella's been in our family (on the "outside") for almost 6 weeks and we're getting into a pretty good groove around here. We are receiving meals from our church family which has been a huge help in getting used to managing everything. I am trying to add things one at a time to avoid burnout. So we actually did school a lot in November, more than I originally planned. Now that it's December, we are stepping back again from the academics of school and focusing on the Christmas season. So we've been doing lots of crafts, Advent activities, special activities and just spending time together. To my surprise, it's actually pretty "academic" but without the books we were using. For example, we're doing a lot of crafts with buttons, so the girls have had a lot of time sorting buttons to use. We've also been painting and practicing good artistic planning and ability.

I put together an Advent calendar/activity plan, which everyone's liked so far. I printed out a Bible verse for each day and glued it onto a card. I also planned an activity for each day and put that on a separate card. Each morning the day's card is sitting with the special elf that is in a new place every day. (Not "Elf on a Shelf" that everyone else and their mom is doing this year.) I chose activities such as cookie baking, crafts and ornament-making, places we're going to go and things we're going to do, and also things like "sing Christmas carols." It's been really fun and fit in nicely with our "December School."

This week and last they played with shaving cream or "snow" and made a huge mess! Then we sang Christmas carols and Caley played on the computer on a caroling website I found. We have been making salt dough ornaments and then painting them, and we learned about St Nicholas on December 6, St Nicholas Day. They even got treats in their shoes that morning! Yesterday they bought a toy for the toy drive, and today we're delivering it.

I feel good about taking December "off" from the usual academics of our school. It is giving us a lot of opportunities to grow in our traditions as a family.

Pictures to come!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-71558507980562183192011-10-21T23:13:00.000-07:002011-10-21T23:13:07.177-07:00The last few weeks

We have been busy the last few weeks but I've neglected to blog about it, mostly because we've just had so much going on! We did a week's study about yeast and mold which led to many opportunities for science, and a ton of fun! We learned that yeast emits gas by having the air blow up a balloon and also tested what yeast likes to eat best. We tested oil, salt, sugar, cookie (NutriGrain bar) and flour (and nothing for a control). We also grew mold on the bread we'd made the previous week and looked at it under a magnifying glass. Gross, but educational!

The following week we learned about babies, including a basic explanation of how babies are made. I was really nervous about this week, because I wasn't sure what kinds of questions the girls would ask. And the fact that they might put 2 and 2 together that Mommy has a baby in her tummy so...ya know. I prepared and had on hand a lot of books and such. But Caley was fine with simply knowing that it takes a Mommy and a Daddy to make a baby, and the baby starts out really small inside the mommy and grows and grows. We read a book about bellybuttons, that everyone has one, and looked at a magazine of "A Child is Born" with the prenatal photos and put them on a timeline of the baby's growth. I also arranged for us to go the Everett Pregnancy Resource Center and look at their materials, including models of babies. We were just in a small counseling room for about 20 minutes and I let the kids explore the models and put them in order of age. They loved it! Talking about babies also lent itself well to how to take care of babies, what babies need, how we can prepare for our baby and how much we've changed since we were babies.

Caley really is enjoying school. We are trying to be flexible and frequently do school work in the afternoon when Wesley is napping. It's easier for her to focus when he's not around climbing all over everything. I enjoy it because it frees up our mornings to do fun things together with everyone, or go somewhere together.

I am really glad to be homeschooling. It makes me really happy to be able to see our children learn together how to love one another and foster real relationships. So far this year is going really, really well and I couldn't be more pleased.
Our 3rd week of school focused on bread, wheat, and other grain. We threshed wheat (kind of, they got the idea), made bread on Monday, watched some videos about how flour is processed and how bread is made in a big bakery. My favorite activity of the week was sampling different types of flour such as dark rye, spelt, rice, and cornmeal. The girls observed each with their 5 senses, even their hearing, but their favorite was tasting each. It was so fun! I got the flours from the bulk section at Fred Meyer. Then they did a little craft with it, which accidentally got gross and thrown away. Sad.
The KONOS curriculum makes our school time fun and brings in a lot of science and history. I think school would get really boring and monotonous if we just did workpages all day. I also really like that KONOS suggests Bible activities. We learned about The Lord's Prayer as part of school one day last week.
Onto week 4!!Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-13182227225591828472011-09-17T21:42:00.000-07:002011-09-26T16:28:00.881-07:00Week 2 in the bag!We had a great second week of school! We finished up our study in plants, seeds, and roots. We planted grass at the end of last week and watched it grow this week, recording what we had observed. We also planted random seeds in some little clay pots and will see what grows in the next few weeks.
Caley is really enjoying her math study. She loves doing her weather chart and math worksheets every day. She's also really blowing me away with her reading.

We have been studying Ruth and read about half a chapter per day and talk about it. We got Caley her own Bible, the ESV Seek and Find Bible. It has all the ESV text like our personal Bibles, but also includes illustrations and "Seek and Find" questions and simplified versions of the stories. I really enjoy it because she can read along with me as I read the text in my own Bible.

This next week we are studying grain, wheat, and yeast. We will bake bread and examine different flours.Only 6 weeks left in this quarter and then it's BABY TIME! This was from this summer, and is so cute I had to include it. I think this was after a particularly troubling morning with the girls. After the discipline, they cuddled up and read together. I love it.Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-60446541577704080452011-09-09T22:17:00.000-07:002011-09-09T22:17:19.926-07:00The first week!We had a GREAT first week of school! I am so encouraged!
We did school work Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week. Tuesday was awesome, despite Wesley being awake and active, which I've been anxious about. He happily entertained himself while I worked with the girls and even though the school room was a mess when we were done, everyone was happy and eager to help me clean up. Really all it needed was some tidying and a vacuum.
Thursday was great too, and Friday was even better because we did our work in the afternoon and Wesley was sleeping. Oh sweet peaceful school time...

Caley is a stinkin' rockstar! She is so excited to sit at the table and do her work for the day. She's reading amazingly, complying with her writing exercises, super eager to do her math work (calendar, weather graph and worksheets) and generally agreeable when something doesn't go her way. Believe me, a month ago she was a completely different kid and I didn't see this school thing happening easily. I am amazed and thankful for God's grace.

Amelia is free to come and go during school time. She sometimes likes to sit at the table with us and other times likes to go play with her toys alone. She generally will come play a game or eat snack with us in the school room. I have been doing her reading book with her but if she's not into it, I don't push it. At some point she will need to come work with us, but that's not when she's only 4.

One thing I'm learning about Caley is also to not push things, within reason. We have a hard time during writing. I have her write the current memory verse (usually only half) on her writing paper. She frequently complains that she can't write an "a" or whatever. I know she can. So I've been doing half of it and letting her finish, or she'll do the first half and I'll finish it. The thing is, three hours later when she's into something else, she's writing everything! Today she was copying what was on Sesame Street online. Her penmanship was beautiful! I know she'll come around. That's one thing I like about homeschooling...if something's not working, all we may need to do an environment change and she'll willingly show me her mad skills.

This week we studied seeds and roots, spent some time in the garden, planted grass in a pot inside, and got our rhythm down for how things may go this year. I'm so glad to be homeschooling because I get to spend my day with the three best kids ever, watching them learn, grow, fight, then hug and make-up, and move on.
Love.Addiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814309193697140130noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-647974365341408125.post-20362195051167816162011-09-09T21:55:00.000-07:002011-09-09T21:55:32.652-07:00Year-at-a-Glance 2011-2012
